Meet the Palmetto GBA Medical Directors

Jennifer Abrams, DO, FACOEP

Dr. Jennifer Abrams serves as the Senior Medical Director for Palmetto GBA. She is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician, graduated with a B.A. from Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. Dr. Abrams attended NYCOM, the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed an Emergency Medicine Internship and Residency program with St. Barnabas Hospital, located in the Bronx. 

Dr. Abrams began practicing Emergency Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in New York, and then relocated to Columbia, S.C., where she was a partner with Carolina Care, staffing Emergency Departments in the Columbia area. Her focus was at the Baptist Medical Center campus where she was on multiple committees and served as Vice Chief of the Emergency Department. After transitioning to Urgent Care, Dr. Abrams became the Medical Director at MUSC Urgent Care Elgin. 

Miguel A. Brito, Jr., M.D., FCAP, FASCP

Dr. Miguel A. Brito, Jr. serves as a Contractor Medical Director for Palmetto GBA. Dr. Brito is Medical Director of the National Railroad Retirement Board and is part of the physician team for Medicare jurisdictions J and M. Due to his expertise in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, he is also part of the MolDx program. He is a graduate of the University of Miami and received his M.D. degree from the University of Florida. He completed his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the Medical College of Virginia. After residency he was in the active private practice of Pathology for 33 years in several roles before becoming partner and owner of his own group for 15 years.

Dr. Brito has been involved in numerous hospital leadership roles from Chief of Pathology and Laboratory, Chief of Surgery, and President of the Medical Staff. He was a member and chairman of multiple hospital committees including Credentials, Infection control, Blood utilization and Medical Staff Executive Committee. He is a member and former Vice President and Executive Committee member of the Florida Society of Pathologists, member and former state issues representative and current House of Delegates representative of the College of American Pathologists, member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and a Clinical Affiliate Assistant Professor of the Florida Atlantic University College of Medicine. He is a graduate of the Physician Leadership Academy of South Florida. He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and is board-certified by the American Board of Pathology in the specialties of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. He is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.

Claudia Campos, M.D., FACP

Dr. Claudia Campos joined Palmetto GBA as Chief Medical Officer in July 2026. She has been a Medicare contractor medical director for 3.5 years. With dual residency training at Louisiana State University and board certifications in physical medicine and rehabilitation and internal medicine, she has a broad clinical background, allowing her to have specific training and expertise in key areas of this role. Her academic career was driven by a passion for improving patient outcomes.

Dr. Campos was a clinician scholar in the Department of Internal Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston Salem, N.C., and a primary care physician at the Department of Veterans Affairs until June 2023. Her research interests have been centered on cardiovascular disease. She has led the study of incident heart failure and DASH diet concordance in the MESA cohort, and a pilot randomized controlled trial of a telemonitoring system for patients with uncontrolled hypertension funded by NIH. She was also first author of a systematic review on the pharmacological treatment of severe hypertension and collaborator on several other publications.

Because of her consistent excellence in teaching, Dr. Campos has received many teaching awards, some of them multiple times, including the prestigious Harrison teaching award master teacher award, culminating in the James Peacock award, which is the highest teaching award in the department of Internal Medicine (given to 1 of 300 faculty members). Her quality improvement innovations spanned from incorporating point of care ultrasound in musculoskeletal care, embedding the ASCVD risk calculator in the electronic health record, creating diabetes hypertension and long COVID pathways in the clinics that she directed. In her current role, she enjoys collaborating with her colleagues and staff at Palmetto GBA and other MACs during policy development and other activities.

Mary E. Dillon, M.D.

Dr. Mary E. Dillon serves as Chief Medical Officer, Contractor Medical Director for Palmetto GBA. She is a physiatrist, board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Dillon is a graduate of Kenyon College and received her M.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She completed a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dr. Dillon began her career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Cincinnati, where she served as Director of Residency Training for several years. Next, Dr. Dillon moved to Tennessee to serve as Medical Director of a large Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility for 20 years.

Dr. Dillon was involved in leadership at the medical center. She served as Chief of Staff, chair of the Medical Executive Committee, Credentials Committee, Quality Improvement Committee, Department of Medicine Committee, and Department of Medicine Quality Committee. She actively participated on numerous other committees including Utilization Management Committee, Physician Wellness Committee, Environment of Care/Hospital Safety Committee, and the health care system’s Neurology Service Line Council, and System Credentials and Clinical Standards Committee. During these years, Dr. Dillon was part of the health system’s Physician Advisory Group. Immediately prior to joining Palmetto GBA, Dr. Dillon worked in utilization management as a medical director at a commercial insurance company.

Michael Hopkins, M.D., FAAEM

Dr. Michael Hopkins serves as a Contractor Medical Director for Palmetto GBA. Dr. Hopkins graduated from the Pennsylvania State University before attending Jefferson Medical College to earn his medical degree. He completed his emergency medicine training at the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann University Emergency Medicine Residency. He has more than 20 years of emergency medicine experience in multiple areas of the country including Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Charleston, S.C. He has certifications in Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advance Pediatric Life Support, Emergency Bedside Ultrasound, and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. He is board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is currently teaching faculty at the Trident Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

Scott J. Trimas, M.D., FACS

Dr. Scott J. Trimas serves as a Contractor Medical Director for Palmetto GBA. Dr. Trimas graduated from Vanderbilt University with a B.A. in Chemistry. After attending medical school at the University of Florida College of Medicine, he completed a residency in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology in Gainesville, Fla. Dr. Trimas then completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Toronto.

He has spent the last 30 years in private practice performing predominantly facial plastic and reconstructive procedures with a mix of nasal and sinus surgery, and skin cancer surgery and reconstruction. Dr. Trimas has served on the written exam review committee for the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery for the last 17 years. He is also a surveyor for American Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), part-time for the last 23 years, and is a senior surveyor and faculty member. His skills in this area include quality improvement, ambulatory surgery centers and CMS guidelines.
