Correct Coding - Porta-Lung Negative Pressure Ventilator - Revised

This article has been updated to include a change in HCPCS code assignment for billing the Porta-Lung® negative pressure ventilator. Code E0460 was originally assigned to this product effective January 1, 1990. Code E0460 was terminated from the HCPCS Code Set effective December 31, 2015. For dates of service on or after January 1, 2016, the correct code for billing the Porta-Lung® negative pressure ventilator item is:

• E0466 HOME VENTILATOR, ANY TYPE, USED WITH NON-INVASIVE INTERFACE, (E.G., MASK, CHEST SHELL)

This code is all-inclusive. Use of any other code(s) to describe the Porta-Lung® negative pressure ventilator, including the miscellaneous code E1399 (DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT, MISCELLANEOUS), is incorrect coding.
